Project Summary: DigiFoot – Spark Project for Deloitte
The methodologies for measuring the environmental impact of digital products are still evolving. This project: a critical first step in measuring that impact, offers an opportunity to explore innovative approaches.
The Question
How might we better understand the environmental impact of our digital properties and products? How might we develop innovative methods for assessing and mitigating the environmental impact of our digital products?
Solution
DigiFoot is a digital carbon footprint calculator created by a team of MSc students from the Design Thinking for Sustainability program at the Innovation Academy, UCD, as part of the Spark Project.
The original goal was to help Deloitte Ireland measure the environmental impact of their digital activities. However, as prototyping and testing evolved, the team discovered that DigiFoot had broader potential applications beyond just Deloitte. In response, we decided to make the app open source, enabling other organisations and individuals to benefit from its features.
Next Steps
The development will continue to be an ongoing, collaborative effort, with contributors adding new functionalities that help us better understand the environmental impact of our digital tools and products.
